How to Setup a Printer on an AGE Managed Windows Computer

How to Setup a Printer on an AGE Managed Windows Computer

Introduction

Though you may have already run into some difficulty with trying to add a printer, personal or otherwise, it is not specifically prohibited. Due to the restrictions placed up on us by our customer(s) there are a few nuances to adding a printer on your AGE managed computer.

Drivers vs. Software

Most printers come with branded software (usually a file ending in ".exe") that can be installed to manage them. Installation of software is prohibited unless it is distributed from the Company Portal or installed by a Privileged Administrator. Luckily, this software is not usually required to print, you usually only need the drivers and we are all allowed to install printer drivers on our AGE managed computers.

Instructions

Scanning Network for Printer

Hit the Windows key on your keyboard and type Add a Printer or Scanner and select it when it comes up in the search results.

In the Printers & Scanners window choose Add a printer or scanner:

Windows will search for local Printers and Scanners, and it will attempt to use something called Universal Print, to try to discover any AGE owned printers via Microsoft 365. The problem is, our version of Microsoft 365 does not support Universal Print, so when you're prompted to login, you need to close that Window.

If your printer shows up in the list, you may select it and choose Add Device otherwise, choose The printer that I want isn't listed.

Depending on your printer you will need to make a choice here. We're going to assume it's a discoverable printer. Choose Add a Bluetooth, wireless or network discoverable printer. Select your printer from the list and click Next and wait for the device to install.

If your printer does not show up in this list, please skip to the section below to add it by IP address.

Once installed, select your printer from the Printers & Scanners list, choose Manage and Print a test page to verify that you can now print.

Adding Printer by IP Address

Find the IP address of the printer. Depending on make/model it may be displayed on the front panel or you may need to access the Network or TCP/IP settings via the front panel.

Follow the instructions above but this time choose: Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname

Enter the IP address in the appropriate field. You may leave the Port name or name it as you see fit. Make sure you select TCP/IP Device or Autodetect in the drop down menu.

Click Next and your computer will attempt to discover the printer via its IP address.

Highlight the printer and Click Next and follow the Wizard to install. Once installed, select your printer from the Printers & Scanners list, choose Manage and Print a test page to verify that you can now print.

If you experience any problems with this process, or with printing after the fact, please reach out to the Support Center, we can get a Privileged Administrator to install any necessary software for a printer.
